Hours Calculator

Clock in, clock out, minus your break — your exact hours, in both the formats payroll uses.

Your shift

Overnight shifts work too — if the clock-out time is earlier than clock-in, we count it as the next day.

Why hours are counted in decimals

Your time clock speaks in hours and minutes; your paycheck speaks in decimals. When a shift of 7 hours and 45 minutes reaches payroll, it becomes 7.75 hours, because 45 minutes is three quarters of an hour. That conversion is where small errors creep in — 7:45 is not 7.45 hours, and the 0.30 difference is real money over a month of shifts. This calculator shows both numbers side by side so you can check a pay stub line by line.

For a full week with overtime, use the time card calculator. To turn hours into an actual paycheck after tax, take your weekly gross to the paycheck calculator.

Hours questions, answered

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. For example, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes; with a 30-minute lunch break that is 8 hours worked. This calculator works it out for you and also shows the decimal version payroll uses.

What is decimal hours?

Payroll systems count time in decimal hours instead of hours and minutes: 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.50 hours, and 15 minutes becomes 0.25. Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate to get gross pay for the shift.

How do overnight shifts work?

If you clock in at 10:00 PM and out at 6:00 AM, the calculator treats the clock-out as the next day, giving 8 hours before breaks. Any shift where the end time is earlier than the start time is counted across midnight.

Should breaks be subtracted from my hours?

Unpaid meal breaks (usually 30 minutes or more, when you are fully off duty) are subtracted. Short paid rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are normally paid under US federal rules and should not be subtracted.

How do I total a whole week of shifts?

Add each day with this calculator, or use our time card calculator, which lays the whole week out in one table and splits out overtime past 40 hours automatically.
