California Paycheck Calculator

Progressive — 9 brackets from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% surtax over $1M — free, with 2026 federal and state rates.

California takes a bigger bite out of a paycheck than any other state — and part of that bite, the SDI disability deduction, is one many calculators quietly leave out. This California paycheck calculator uses the real 2026 state brackets, the state standard deduction and the SDI rate, so the number you see is the number that should land in your account.

Your pay

Pre-tax deductions lower your income tax but not Social Security and Medicare — just like a real pay stub.

How your California paycheck is taxed in 2026

California also takes SDI — State Disability Insurance — of 1.3% of your wages in 2026, with no wage cap. Most paycheck calculators forget it; it is roughly $65 a month on a $60,000 salary, so we include it in every California result.

Three more deductions apply in every state. Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets (10% to 37%) after the federal standard deduction — $16,100 if you file single, $32,200 if married filing jointly. Social Security takes 6.2% of your wages up to $184,500. Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000.

California paycheck questions

What is the SDI deduction on my California paycheck?

SDI is California's State Disability Insurance. In 2026 it takes 1.3% of your wages with no cap, and it funds short-term disability and paid family leave. On a $60,000 salary that is about $780 a year — this calculator includes it, which is why our California result can look slightly lower than calculators that skip it.

What are California's tax brackets for 2026?

California has nine brackets from 1% on the first slice of income up to 12.3%, plus a 1% Mental Health Services surtax on income above $1 million, which makes the true top rate 13.3%. Most full-time workers sit in the 6% to 9.3% brackets, and because the system is progressive, your effective rate is well below your top bracket.

How much tax is taken from a $75,000 paycheck in California?

For a single filer with no pre-tax deductions, about $7,670 goes to federal income tax, about $2,930 to California state tax, $4,650 to Social Security, $1,088 to Medicare and $975 to SDI — leaving take-home pay of around $57,690 a year. Run the calculator above with your own numbers for your exact figure.

Does California tax overtime and bonuses differently?

They are taxed at the same rates as regular pay, but employers often withhold bonuses at a flat supplemental rate (10.23% for California), so a bonus check can look over- or under-taxed until you file your return and it all evens out.
