A New York paycheck can carry three layers of income tax: federal, state, and — if you live in the five boroughs — New York City tax on top. This calculator handles all three with the 2026 state rates, including the small rate cut New York passed for this year, so you can see your real take-home pay before payday.

Your pay

Pre-tax deductions lower your income tax but not Social Security and Medicare — just like a real pay stub.

How your New York paycheck is taxed in 2026

New York cut the five lowest state rates by 0.1 points for 2026, so most workers keep a little more than last year. If you live in New York City, the city adds its own income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% — tick the NYC box in the calculator and we add it for you. Yonkers residents pay a small surcharge on top of their state tax.

Three more deductions apply in every state. Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets (10% to 37%) after the federal standard deduction — $16,100 if you file single, $32,200 if married filing jointly. Social Security takes 6.2% of your wages up to $184,500. Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000.

New York paycheck questions

Did New York really cut taxes for 2026?

Yes, a little. The FY2026 budget cut the five lowest state rates by 0.1 percentage points — the bottom rate is now 3.9% instead of 4%, and the rate most middle-income workers pay is 5.4% instead of 5.5%. Another 0.1-point cut is scheduled for 2027. The top rates (up to 10.9%) did not change.

Who pays New York City income tax?

Only people who live in New York City — Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. Rates run from 3.078% to 3.876%. If you commute into the city from New Jersey, Connecticut or upstate, you do not pay it. Tick the NYC box in the calculator if you are a city resident.

How much tax is taken from a $80,000 paycheck in New York?

For a single filer outside NYC, roughly $8,770 goes to federal income tax, about $3,720 to New York State, $4,960 to Social Security and $1,160 to Medicare — take-home pay of about $61,390. Living in NYC would take roughly another $2,670 a year in city tax.

What about Yonkers tax?

Yonkers residents pay a surcharge equal to 16.75% of their net New York State tax, and people who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a 0.5% earnings tax. It is not included in this calculator's result, so Yonkers workers should expect a little less than the figure shown.
