Illinois Paycheck Calculator

Flat 4.95% on income above the personal exemption — free, with 2026 federal and state rates.

Illinois keeps its state tax deliberately simple — one flat rate for everyone — but simple does not mean small, and Chicago workers feel it on every check. This Illinois paycheck calculator applies the 4.95% flat rate and the state personal exemption with 2026 federal figures, so you see your true take-home pay.

Your pay

Pre-tax deductions lower your income tax but not Social Security and Medicare — just like a real pay stub.

How your Illinois paycheck is taxed in 2026

Illinois is simple by design: one flat rate of 4.95% for everyone, whether you earn $30,000 or $300,000. The state gives a personal exemption of $2,850 per person before the rate applies. Some cities add small local taxes and fees, but there is no local income tax on wages in Illinois.

Three more deductions apply in every state. Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets (10% to 37%) after the federal standard deduction — $16,100 if you file single, $32,200 if married filing jointly. Social Security takes 6.2% of your wages up to $184,500. Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000.

Illinois paycheck questions

What is Illinois' income tax rate in 2026?

A flat 4.95% for everyone, on income above the personal exemption of $2,850 per person. Illinois voters rejected a graduated-rate amendment in 2020, so the flat rate stays in the state constitution.

How much tax is taken from a $65,000 paycheck in Illinois?

For a single filer, roughly $5,620 goes to federal income tax, about $3,080 to Illinois, $4,030 to Social Security and $943 to Medicare — take-home pay of around $51,330 a year. Use the calculator above for your own pay and schedule.

Does Chicago add its own income tax?

No. Neither Chicago nor any Illinois city charges an income tax on wages. Chicago residents pay higher sales and property taxes instead, which do not come out of a paycheck.

Why does my Illinois withholding look higher than 4.95% some months?

Because the state rate is only one line on the stub. Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) come out of the same check, and overtime or a bonus month pushes more of your pay into higher federal brackets.
